Youngsters rule the 6th AK Track and Field Weekend meet

Youngsters stamped authority as the 2nd day of the 6th and final AK track and field weekend meet concluded today at the Ulinzi Sports Complex .

Sirikwa Classic 6km junior champion Cynthia Chepkurui from Lemotit Camp was the fastest in the 5,000m women’s final, clocking 15 minutes 44.81 seconds, ahead of the 2013 world silver medallist Mercy Cherono, who finished 2nd in 15:45.50 minutes,7.46 seconds ahead of 3rd placed Diana Wanza .

Olympian Vivian Chebet from KDF took 2 minutes 46.7 seconds to win the 800 m, 0.01 seconds ahead of Central Rifts Naomi Korir, who finished 2nd, while Josephine Mancha of Magnolia camp completed the podium places in 2:07.58 minutes.

World Indoor silver medallist Noah Kibet from North Rift won the men’s 800m in 1 minute 45.98 seconds, followed by Cornelius Tuwei of KDF and Vincent Kibet of Prisons in 1:46.14 and 1:47.42 minutes in 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively.

South Rift swept all podium positions in the 3,000msc men’s final led by Emmanuel Lemiso Someki, who clocked 8 minutes 45.20 seconds.

Peter Rono finished 2nd in 8:53.65, while Cosmas Mutai crossed the finish line in 3rd position in 8:55.63 minutes.

The meet now paves the way for counties’ track and field weekend championships set for the 7th next month and regional championships a week later.

The track and field season will culminate with the national championships to be held between 26th and 28th June, which will also serve as trials to select the 10,000m team for the World Athletics Championships.
