World record breakers Kipyegon and Chebet set to arrive home tonight

Three-time 1500m Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon and double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet, are set to arrive home tonight from Eugene, USA, where they set new world records at the 50th Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meet last Saturday.

Kipyegon, also a triple world champion, lowered her 2024 world record, setting a new record of 3 minutes 48.68 seconds in her 1st Diamond League race this season.

Chebet also set a new world record in the 5000 m by becoming the 1st woman alive to run under 14 minutes with a new record of 13:58.06,her 3rd world record, lowering the 2023 Gudaf Tsegay’s previous record of 14:00.21 set in 2023.

Besides the new World record Chebet also booked her ticket for this September World Athletics Championships in 5000m where she will be accompanied by defending champion Faith Kipyegon,Agnes Jebet Ngétich and Margaret Akidor.

Kipyegon will arrive in the first batch aboard KLM flight KL565, scheduled to land at 10:00pm, while Chebet and the 2nd group will touch down at JKIA at 11:50pm aboard Qatar Airways flight QR1341.

The two were among over 20 Kenyan athletes who competed at the Prefontaine Classic meet.

Other athletes in the team which will be returning home include Benson Kiplangat and Ishmael Rokitto Kipkurui, who punched their World Athletics Championship tickets in the 10000m men alongside US-based Edwin Kurgat.
