David Omwoyo elected Chair of World and East African Press councils

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo has been elected as the Chairperson of the World Association of Press Councils (WAPC) an organization that brings together media councils and similar independent bodies from around the world.

According to a statement, Omwoyo was also elected Chairperson of the East African Press Councils o on Wednesday during the 2nd Pan African Media Councils’ Summit 2025, held in Arusha, Tanzania.

Launched in Arusha, Tanzania, in October 2023, East African Press Councils was established by media professionals in the East African Community (EAC) to promote and protect free, independent, professional and accountable media on the sub-continent.

The KEG celebrated Omwoyo noting that his appointment marks a significant milestone, not just for Kenya, but for the African continent at large.

“We celebrate the Media Council of Kenya CEO David Omwoyo on his election as Chairperson of the World Association of Press Councils & Chairperson of the East African Press Councils.” Stated KEG.

Adding that: “A proud moment for Kenya and a strong voice for press freedom across the globe.”

The Public Relations Association of Kenya (PRSK) also joined in congratulating Omwoyo in his appointment.

“On behalf of the PRSK family, we celebrate your remarkable achievements and are proud of you as #Team PR” Noted PRSK on their X handle.

Omwoyo is the MCK CEO, the national regulator of Kenya’s media sector with over 15 years experience in journalism, media training and management, spanning the public, private, religious and non-governmental sectors.

Before joining the MCK, he was the Managing Director of Waumini Communications and Communications Director for the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops for six years growing an enviable countrywide media network.

He also worked in academia, as Fundraising and Donor Relations Manager at Egerton University, with responsibility for institutional advancement and donor relations.
