National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has declared his support for President William Ruto’s bid for a second term, citing the administration’s track record in equitable resource distribution and implementation of transformative projects across the country.

Speaking on Saturday at Posta Grounds in Kanduyi Constituency, Bungoma County, during a women empowerment campaign, Wetang’ula urged residents to rally behind President Ruto, whom he credited for reviving stalled projects and driving socio-economic development in all 47 counties.

“We have come here to talk to our people and remind ourselves to support Dr. William Ruto for a second term in office because he has ensured equitable distribution of national resources, including revamping all stalled projects such as roads,” said the Speaker.

He highlighted several achievements under President Ruto’s administration over the past three years, noting that Bungoma County, in particular, has benefited from key developments: the establishment of a passport centre, the construction of Masinde Muliro International Stadium, and the elevation of two national polytechnics, namely Kisiwa and Sang’alo.

He further revealed plans to upgrade Bungoma County Referral Hospital to a Level Six facility, supported by Ksh 8 billion in funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

“Our people will no longer need to travel to Kenyatta National Hospital or Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital,” Wetang’ula noted, emphasising the expected improvement in local healthcare access.

The Speaker also defended the government’s plan to lease the troubled Nzoia Sugar Factory, arguing that it would guarantee cane farmers payment within seven days of delivering their produce, and criticized politicians opposing the move as “using the predicament that has befallen the sugar factories to resuscitate their dying political careers.”

Citing national food security gains under President Ruto’s regime, Wetang’ula credited the subsidised fertiliser programme for increasing maize harvests from 35 million bags in 2024 to a projected 185 million bags this year, describing it as the result of President Ruto’s “sound policies and interventions.”

He added that the government plans to ease traffic congestion and boost economic growth by constructing a dual carriageway from Limuru to Malaba, with Ksh 450 million already allocated in this year’s budget for initial works, including road surveys.

The Speaker also dismissed remarks by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who had reportedly urged Kenyans living abroad to stop remitting money back home.

“There no one out there who  is sending money to government, those Kenyans abroad especially the United States, they send dollars to their mothers, their fathers, their sisters,  to pay school fees, build homes or invest,” Wetang’ula said.

“That is the money that aggregates to almost Ksh 400 billion that stabilises our foreign exchange reserves. So when you there and tell them not to send any money, you are simply saying ignore your parents and relatives, let your parents die of hunger as you enjoy life. That is not the kind of politics we want for our country,” he held.

He asked Kenyans to be patient with President Ruto as he seeks to fulfil his campaign promises and his pledges.

Calling Gachagua’s statements “misplaced and out of touch with the realities facing millions of Kenyans,” Wetang’ula urged the diaspora community to continue supporting development back home.
