The national soccer team Harambee Stars was knocked out of the ongoing African Nations Championship,CHAN after losing 4-3 through post match penalties to Madagascar in their quarter final match played at Moi Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi.
The two teams tied 1-1 after regular and extra time. Right back Alphonce Omija fired Kenya into the lead heading home a Boniface Muchiri free kick three minutes after restart.
Ryan Ogam appeared to have doubled Kenya’s lead shortly after but Senegalese referee Adelbert Diouf disallowed the goal following a foul in the build up.
Kenya kept the momentum but against a run of play Madagascar were awarded a penalty after defender Lewis Bandi handled the ball in the box. Fenohazina Razafimaro levelled the scores from the spot in the 70th minute.
The two teams failed to find the winner forcing the game to be decided through penalties. Madagascar scored their penalties through Nantenaina Randriamanampisoa, Nomena Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa, Fenohasina Gilles Razafimaro and Toky Rakotondraibe while Heriniaina Toky Bienvenu Randrianirina missed his kick.
Kenya converted its penalties through Mohammed Siraj,Daniel Sakari,Sylvester Owino, while Alphonce Omija and Mike Kibwage missed their penalties.
Against Madascar Coach Benni Mccarthy handed Benstanley Omondi and Ryan Ogam the attacking role while deploying Lewis Bandi,Ben Muchiri,Marvin Nabwire and Suleiman Manzur Okwaro in midfield.Alpha Onyango acted s the pivot in the heart of the midfield while Abud Omar Michael Kibwage and Alphonce Omija manned the defence.
Two more quarter final matches will be played Saturday : co hosts Uganda will take on Senegal while Sudan will play Algeria.
