Yego clinches 6th title as Africa Senior Athletics Championship concludes in Accra

2015 World champion Julius Yego won a sixth African Senior Athletics Championship javelin gold medal as Kenya finished second overall with 5 gold 5 silver and 7 bronze at the 24th edition of the games that concluded in Accra Ghana.

Yego won gold with a throw of 79.87 metres to win Kenya’s fourth gold in Accra.

 

Diana Chepkemoi rounded the top podium step for Kenya after winning the women’s 3000 metres steeplechase in 9 minutes 29.18 seconds.

The other gold medallists were Diana Wanza in the women’s 10,000 metres, Kevin Chesang in the men’s 10,000 metres and Kelvin Loti in the men’s 800 metres.

The silver medallists were decathlete Edween Too, race walkers Stephen Ndangiri and Silva Jerono, Mercy Koskey in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase race and the men’s 4x400m relay team.

The bronze medals were won by Isaac Kimunu in the long jump, Belinda Obura in the shot put, Asbel Kiprop Kemboi in the high jump, Silas Senchura in the 10,000 metres, Laban Kiptoo in the men’s 5000 metres, the 4x400m mixed relay team, and the women’s 4x400m relay team.

South Africa topped the championships with 18 medals comprising 9 gold 3 silver and 6 bronze. The next African Senior Athletics Championships will be hosted by Botswana in 2028.
