China Square, a Chinese-owned shopping complex, has opened a new outlet in Kisumu County, investing Ksh. 500 million to tap into the consumer market in the western region.
Located in the heart of Kisumu City at Mega City Mall, the new outlet offers a wide variety of products at competitive prices, including home goods, electronics, fashion, and more. This latest expansion follows the success of the company’s outlets in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi and the Coastal City of Mombasa, which have gained a loyal customer base due to their extensive selection and budget-friendly prices.
On the opening day over the weekend, hundreds of residents and enthusiastic shoppers flocked to the store, eager to take advantage of a 20% discount.
At the launch of the new outlet, the fifth in Kenya, the company’s Chief Executive Officer Lei Cheng noted he was excited by the expansion, stating that the new outlet to Kisumu was long overdue. He noted that the decision to set up business in Kisumu, Kenya’s third-largest city, was driven by numerous requests from customers who had traveled to Nairobi to shop at their stores.
“We’ve been serving Nairobi for some time now. The requests from Kisumu have been overwhelming, and I am happy that today we have opened this shop so our customers can enjoy convenient shopping,” he said.

Lei underscored the significance of the store’s extensive product range, citing this as a reason the company retains a competitive edge over other retailers in the region.
“We have one of the largest varieties of products in the region. Here we have so many products that you cannot find in any other store,” he said.
In addition to providing competitive pricing, he mentioned that the Kisumu outlet will create jobs for local residents, contributing to the region’s economic growth. Mr. Lei also stated that the outlet will source goods from local Jua Kali artisans and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), a strategy he believes will help stimulate local manufacturing.
“Some of them have been to our shops in Nairobi where they have taken samples of some of the products, especially plastics which they copy and manufacture and we buy from them,” Lei explained
As a result of this approach, the CEO announced that China Square has reduced its imports from 90% to 60%, now sourcing 40% of its products locally. The new store in Kisumu is part of the company’s ambitious plan to expand in Kenya’s growing retail market. Plans are in place to open additional outlets in other cities, including Nakuru, and Eldoret.
