The Kenya Editors’ Guild has condemned what it describes as “primitive attacks” on journalists after police officers in Majengo, Nairobi, assaulted three journalists covering protests following the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old student.

According to Kenya Editors’ Guild President Zubeidah Kananu, the journalists were interviewing residents about the incident when police officers, seemingly uneasy with their presence, turned on them with batons, kicks, and slaps.

One journalist was chased into her car where officers allegedly forced her to delete footage while another was beaten as he tried to assist his colleague.

“Despite numerous engagements with authorities to foster an appreciation for journalists’ work, the police continue to either disregard their role or deliberately target, injure, and intimidate them. This latest attack is further evidence of the shrinking space for media freedom in Kenya,” Zubeidah stated

The Guild has demanded swift action from the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, calling for the immediate arrest of the officers involved, compensation for the journalists for damaged equipment, and a public apology.

Zubeidah also pointed to a pattern of police hostility toward journalists, recalling similar attacks during last year’s Gen Z-led protests against the Finance Bill 2024.

Despite multiple reports being filed in the past she argues that no meaningful action has been taken.

“The continued targeting of journalists is unacceptable. We call on the relevant authorities to act swiftly to protect press freedom in Kenya,” said Zubeidah.

The National Police Service (NPS) in a statement acknowledged the allegations and assured that investigations into the incident are underway.

“As a Service, we are gravely concerned and strongly condemn such misconduct. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation. The National Police Service maintains a cordial relationship with the media and is committed to safeguarding and promoting media freedom, as well as protecting journalists in Kenya, in line with the Constitution and international standards,” NPS stated.
