The National Heroes Council has teamed up with the Kenya prison service and other environmental champions to plant over 3,500 trees at Kitengela GK Prison in response to the government’s ambitious plan to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.
The National Heroes Council Chief Executive Officer Charles Wambia who led the exercise, said the council, like any other government institution, is cognisant of the impact of climate change and has an obligation to help the country mitigate the same.
“Within our category of honours, environmentalists is a very key area. We want our heroes to remain active in society, not just honoured and idle at home but honoured and involved in supporting government initiatives,” stated Mwambia.
The host officer in charge Kitengela Gk prison Stephen Kemey while welcoming the initiative said this was among many partnerships the correctional facility was undertaking to utilise parts of its facilities in the tree planting exercise.
“We also intend to do a forest in partnership with the Kenya Prison Service and the National Heroes Council in line with the greening initiative that the President started,” Kemey said.
Area Assistant County Commissioner Crisps Mwadzoya and others environmental champions who participated in the exercise vowed to redouble their efforts to ensure the country achieves the 10 percent forest cover by 2032.
