Kenya Commercial Bank has committed Ksh 8 million towards the National Athletics Championships and national trials.
Ksh 4 million will be channeled towards the 3-day national championships at the Uinzi Sports Complex starting tomorrow until Friday, while the remaining amount will be set aside for the national trials set for between 1st and 2nd August.
KCB is returning its sponsorship to athletics after a 15-year hiatus.
Speaking during the unveiling of the sponsorship, AK President Lt Rtd Gen Jackson Tuwei, said the partnership will go a long way in improving the welfare of the athletes as well as promote the nurturing of talents.
Speaking at the sponsorship unveiling ceremony held in Nairobi, KCB Foundation Director Mendi Njonjo said:
“Today’s sponsorship reflects our deep belief in two things. First, in the extraordinary talent of Kenyan athletes who consistently prove themselves as world beaters, and second, in the robust systems that identify and nurture this talent,
“Our partnership with Athletics Kenya (AK) is about the power of sport to unite our national spirit and ignite the dreams of millions of young Kenyans who intend to pursue their sporting ambitions,” she added.
800m world under-20champion Sarah Moraa said she is ready to face off against world champion Sarah Moraa and defending champion Lillian Odira.
“I am well prepared both psychologically and physically. I will be targeting to run a good race. Qualifying for World Championships eases pressure on me as I target to run a PB before or during the trials.” Moraa said
Reigning national 400m hurdles champion Wiseman Were has exuded confidence ahead of the nationals, which he believes will be a good preparation for the national trials.
“I don’t like setting targets for myself but am looking forward to running faster times after delivering a good performance during the Kip Keino Classic.” Were Said
The national championships will bring together athletes from all AK regions and 4 affiliates who will compete for national pride, which also marks the conclusion of the track and field season.
