Kilifi Governor receives tourism excellence award

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro has received a prestigious award as the Governor of the Year Tourism Transformation Award in Kenya 2025 in recognition of outstanding excellence and Impact.

Mungaro received the Jamhuri Kenya Awards during the celebrations to mark the end of the third edition of the Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament he initiated three years ago at the Malindi Golf Club.

More than 250 professionals and amateur golfers attended the two-day tournament over the weekend, an event described as having contributed to a great impact to sports tourism.

William Onyango Odek from Nyali Golf Club emerged the overall winner of the annual Kilifi Governor Golf Cup.

There were also other winners in the amateur Golfers who made away with both cash and other prizes.

Mung’aro said the award was clear proof that reviving tourism was bearing fruit and urged other investors owning the resorts which are grounded to rebuild them or sell them to others who are ready to invest.

“This annual event, proudly sponsored through my Foundation, continues to bring together golfers, partners, and supporters in an effort to promote sports tourism and position Kilifi as a premier sporting destination,” he said.

He said the annual cup will be a four-day event, and the winner will get a KSh 1 million prize next year.

William Onyango Odek, the overall winner, said he was happy to have emerged the winner and thanked the Governor for organising the Golf Cup.

Raymond Ngalla, the Kilifi CEC in Charge of Trade Tourism, Culture Heritage and Cooperative Development, Kilifi said the Golf Cup was gaining momentum and plans to make it bigger and attract golfers from Kenya, East Africa and the world.
