The sixth edition of the Kip Keino Classic continental tour will be held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex after being moved from Nyayo Stadium on 31st of this month.
Race director Barnaba Korir cited the change of venue as due to the delay in the laying off of the new tartan track at Nyayo Stadium.
Korir emphasised that the change of venue will only affect the number of spectators, but the quality and standards will remain unchanged.
It will be the first time the event will be staged out of its traditional venues, Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums, since its inclusion in the World Athletics calendar in 2020.
This year’s edition has already attracted top European sprinters, among them 2019 world bronze medallist Mujinga Kambundji, 2016 Olympic javelin champion Thomas Rohler from Germany, and both two-time world and Olympic Anderson Peters from Grenada and reigning hammer throw world champion Ethan Katzberg from Germany.
Laying of the tartan track currently underway may take longer than anticipated with works still going on; hence, the decision for the change of venue.
“Preparations for this year’s edition, as far as Iam concerned, are almost complete. We have both world and Olympic champions who have confirmed, as well as the Swiss sprint star Mujinga Kambundji,” cited Korir.
Kenya’s meet will be the 6th stop of the gold tour continental championships this year after the Maurie Plant meet on 29th March in Australia, the Botswana Grand Prix on the 12th of last month, and the Seiko Grand Prix in Tokyo, which was held yesterday.
The only change we have is the venue from Nyayo to Ulinzi, which means fewer numbers of spectators will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Let’s come out in numbers and support our own Mary Moraa, Sarah Moraa, Julius, and Ferdinand Omanyala as they take on the rest of the world.” Korir said
Zagreb is scheduled to host the 4th meet between the 22nd and 24th of this month before paving the way for the Poland meet on 30th May.
