Ex-National Museums boss, four others deny charges of embezzling Ksh 490M

Former National Museums of Kenya Director-General Mzalendo Kibunja and four others have been ordered to pay Ksh 10M bond or an alternative of Ksh 5M cash bail in fraud case after pleading not guilty to all charges leveled against them.

The five are accused of embezzling public funds 490 million Kenya Shillings in a corruption scheme at the Kenya National Museum of Kenya between Financial Years 2015/2016 and 2021/2022.

In a statement on Monday, the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) said the suspects hatched a fraudulent scheme to make payment of salaries to ghost workers over 5 years.

Adding that the money would subsequently be transferred to senior officials.

The other four accused persons include: Stanvas Ongalo Opijah – Director, Human Resource and Administration, National Museums of Kenya, ICT Officer, Payroll section Oliver Okinyi, Wycliffe Ongata an Accountant, Payroll Section and Oscar Mwaura a Ghost Employee recruiter.

The five have been accused of conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, acquisition of proceeds of crime, money laundering as well as financial misconduct.
