Triple Olympic Champion Faith Kipyegon, produced a dominant performance as she smashed her own 1500m World Record at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League in Eugene, USA, on Saturday night.
The triple world champion in the 1500m looked intentional from start to finish, setting a new world record of 3 minutes 48.68 seconds, lowering her previous record of 3:49.04, set a year ago in Paris.
Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji finished 2nd in 3:51.44,followed by Jessica Hull in 3rd place 3:52.67.
Her record came barely a week after missing out on Nike’s Breaking4 mission in France.
The win was a strong message from the red-hot 31-year-old, as she kicked off her Diamond title defence in style and as she eyes her 4th world title in September.
Olympic and World bronze medallist Faith Cherotich finished 2nd in the 3000 m steeplechase, running a PB (8:48.71) behind her rival Winfred Yavi of Bahrain, who won the race in a new meeting record and world lead of 8:45.25.
Former Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai from Uganda finished 3rd.
However, it was a bad day in the office for reigning 800m world champion Mary Moraa, after finishing a distant 9th, clocking 2:00.51, as she continues with her search for her 1st Diamond race win of the season.
The race was won by Olympic silver medallist Tsige Duguma from Ethiopia in 1:57.10, followed by Prudence Sekgodiso, of South Africa and Ugandan Halimah Nakaayi in 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively.
