Shock and grief have engulfed residents of Vatican Estate in Olkalou, Nyandarua County, after a middle-aged woman was brutally beheaded by an unknown assailant.

The victim, identified as Maureen, a mother of three and a well-known boiled eggs vendor in Olkalou town, was found dead in her house under gruesome circumstances. The assailant is believed to have committed the act during a heavy downpour, taking advantage of the poor weather to mask the attack. A blood-stained knife believed to have been used in the killing was found abandoned near the fence of her compound.

According to neighbours, the crime likely occurred when the area was experiencing heavy rain, which may explain why no screams or commotion were heard. When the rain subsided, residents noticed Maureen’s door wide open and a trail of blood leading outside. Alarmed, they followed the trail and discovered her lifeless body lying in a pool of blood inside the house.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with Betty Muchina, a human rights defender based in Nyandarua, condemning the heinous act and urging law enforcement agencies to act swiftly in apprehending the perpetrator.

“This is not just a personal tragedy; it’s a community crisis. The murder of this woman is part of a disturbing trend of rising violence against women in Nyandarua. Authorities must act decisively and urgently,” said Muchina.

Maureen’s killing adds to the growing list of women who have lost their lives in mysterious circumstances in the county, raising concern over the increasing number of unresolved murder cases.

Local authorities led by Nyandarua County commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa and Nyandarua Police Commander Stella Cherono have launched investigations into the incident and are appealing to members of the public with any information to come forward.
