Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has said women play the vital role in peace building efforts.
He particularly singled out regions afflicted by conflict and emphasized on the involvement of women that has led to more enduring and comprehensive peace agreements.
Speaking from his office after receiving a new book titled “Women’s Role in Negotiations in Southern Sudan” by Dr. Ruth Agesa, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education in Vihiga County, Speaker Wetang’ula highlighted the unique and often overlooked contributions women make in conflict resolution processes.
“In conflict-ridden nations, women face unique and devastating consequences, including heightened vulnerability to sexual violence, displacement, loss of access to essential services and increased risks to their physical and mental health,” said Wetang’ula.
He added: “They also endure significant social and economic hardships, such as food insecurity, poverty and limited access to education and healthcare.”
Dr. Agesa’s book, which delves into the pivotal role of women in the peace negotiations in Southern Sudan, was commended by the Speaker as a timely and critical contribution to the discourse on sustainable peace.
He praised the work for shining a light on how women, often marginalized in formal negotiations, are instrumental in rebuilding fractured communities.
“Peace agreements that involve women tend to be more sustainable because women bring unique and valuable perspectives to conflict resolution,” Wetang’ula stated.
“Their experiences and insights often reflect the needs of the most vulnerable, thereby fostering inclusive and lasting solutions.”
Reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to regional stability, the Speaker emphasized that the country remains steadfast in its support for peace efforts in Southern Sudan.
Kenya, he said, stands in solidarity with the people of Southern Sudan and we share in the dream of achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
Dr. Agesa expressed gratitude for the recognition and echoed the importance of gender inclusion in peace processes.
The meeting marks a continued push from Kenyan leadership to advocate for women’s empowerment and involvement in decision-making at all levels, especially in conflict resolution and governance.
