Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, The Arts and Heritage, Hanna Wendot Cheptumo, has officially launched the Top Car Digital Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including femicide.

According to CS Cheptumo, the initiative signals a renewed government effort to tackle the alarming rise in violence against women and girls through innovative, tech-driven methods.

Speaking during the flagging-off ceremony in Nairobi, CS Cheptumo stated that the campaign represents a crucial step in the government’s ongoing battle to eliminate all forms of GBV.

“Digital campaigns are one of our innovative strategies to accelerate sensitization against Gender-Based Violence, including femicide,” she said.

In the past six months alone, she revealed that Kenya has reported over 100 cases of femicide, with many more likely going unreported. The Cabinet Secretary condemned GBV and femicide as heinous crimes that require urgent attention.

“The government has committed to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls to promote gender equality and women empowerment,” she added.

The initiative will deploy four digital message-branded vehicles throughout Nairobi’s neighbourhoods, conveying key messages on the prevention and response to GBV and femicide. The digital caravan will later be expanded to other major towns as part of a national strategy to raise awareness and encourage behaviour change.

CS Cheptumo also underscored the importance of leveraging technology not only to enhance advocacy but also as a tool to respond to and prevent technology-facilitated GBV.

“Recent studies have revealed that technology facilitated Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is on the increase, and in response, we should leverage on technology also to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including femicide,” the CS stated.

As she flagged off the vehicles, CS Cheptumo made a rallying call to all Kenyans to support the campaign and become ambassadors for change within their communities.

“It is my humble duty to flag off the four cars on a mission to deliver Anti Gender-Based Violence (GBV) including femicide message,” she remarked.
