Public viewing has started at the Mamboleo Stadium in Kisumu County as thousands of mourners gather to pay their last respects to the late Raila Odinga.
Prayers marked the beginning of the viewing ceremony, that started at 9:45 am Saturday morning.
The ceremony is ongoing smoothly with tight security as well as emergency services stationed on the ground.
The late Odinga died on Wednesday in India where he was receiving treatment.
The military aircraft carrying remains of the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga landed at the Kisumu International Airport at 7:20 am and was later airlifted to the Mamboleo Stadium, Kisumu County arriving at 8:48 am.
After the viewing, which is slated to end at around 3:00 pm, the body will be airlifted straight to Bondo for a night vigil at Raila’s Opoda Farm home ahead of his burial on Sunday.
Addressing the press Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, Odinga’s funeral service will take place at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology before his interment at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Nyamira, Bondo, Siaya County.
PS Omollo thanked the members of public for maintaining calm and peace even as he assured mourners that everyone will be given a chance to view the body of the late Odinga.
“We want to appreciate the people of Kisumu for according the Right Honourable Raila a dignified send-off. We will ensure that all mourners get the chance to view his body before it departs for Bondo,” said PS.
