This year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui were marked by emotion, with performances and tributes in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who was laid to rest on Sunday at Kang’o ka Jaramogi, the ancestral home of the Odinga family.

The national event held at Ithookwe Stadium featured touching presentations by pupils who formed the words “Shujaa Raila” on the field before reciting a poem titled “Lala Salama Raila Shujaa…Wakenya Tutakumiss,” in memory of the veteran politician.

A clip of Raila singing his favourite song, “Jamaica Farewell,” was played during the ceremony as Kenyans reflected on his long political journey and contribution to the country.

And when President William Ruto took the podium to deliver his speech, a moment of silence was observed.

The Head of State hailed Raila as a leader who championed a Kenya that is free, fair, governed by the rule of law, and filled with limitless opportunities for all.

“For Baba, it was never about him becoming President; it was about Kenya having a good President, and Kenya moving from third-world status to first-world in as short a time as possible, so that we-as a people and a nation-can realise our true potential,” said Ruto.

Across the country, leaders and institutions used the day to celebrate Raila’s legacy, describing him as a true hero whose sacrifices shaped Kenya’s democracy.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki described Raila as “one of the greatest leaders to ever walk our land” adding that the day also serves as a reminder to honour “all those who came before us, men and women who selflessly defended our sovereignty, dignity and freedom from colonial domination, and expanded our political rights.”

The ruling UDA Party described the late opposition chief as “a hero whose vision, courage and unwavering spirit inspired generations and shaped the nation’s journey.”

Raila’s party ODM wrote, “On this day, our Shujaa remains Raila Amolo Odinga. Happy Mashujaa Day.”

Nominated Senator Crystal Asige said, “Mashujaa Day belongs to you, Jowi. Even though you’ve rested, your roar still echoes in the hearts of dreamers and in the soul of this nation.”

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka said he dedicated this year’s Mashujaa Day to Raila, describing him as “a brother and dear friend who exhibited true heroism not only in words but also in his resolve to persevere, hope and believe.”
