Ethiopia, Djibouti, South Sudan ratify new IGAD Treaty

Djibouti, Ethiopia, and South Sudan, have ratified the new Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) treaty, marking a significant step forward in the process of renewing foundational agreement.

In a statement on Friday,  IGAD noted that Ethiopia has deposited the Instruments of Ratification, demonstrating its firm commitment to the advancement of regional cooperation.

The new IGAD Treaty, adopted by the Heads of State and Government during the 14th Ordinary Session of the IGAD Summit held in Djibouti on June 12, 2023, represents a major evolution in our regional framework.

According to IGAD, the treaty expands and diversifies areas of cooperation among Member States and strengthens the engagements with the international community.

IGAD Executive Secretary, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, expressed his gratitude and encouragement, stating: “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Republic of Djibouti, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and the Republic of South Sudan for their decisive action in ratifying the new IGAD Treaty. This significant progress reflects their commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and unity. I encourage all Member States to follow this positive example and complete the ratification process. By doing so, we will further solidify our collective efforts towards peace, stability, and development in the region.”

IGAD remains committed to supporting its Member States through this important development and looks forward to the full ratification of the Treaty by all its Member States.
