Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has confirmed the release of Kenyan national Boniface Mwangi.
Mwangi was arrested in Dar es Salaam while attempting to attend the court hearing of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is facing treason charges. He was detained alongside Ugandan lawyer Agather Atuhaire.
“We have been engaging through diplomatic channels with the Tanzanian authorities, including very early today. And the information I have is that he has been released. There will be communication including from himself after he has found an opportunity to talk,” said Mudavadi
His release comes just hours after the Ministry expressed frustration over the lack of transparency regarding Mwangi’s situation in the neighbouring country.
The Ministry protested that Tanzanian authorities had not provided information on his whereabouts, despite diplomatic inquiries.
“The Ministry notes that, despite several requests, officials of the Government of Kenya have been denied consular access and information to Mr. Mwangi. The Ministry is also concerned about his health, overall wellbeing and the absence of information regarding his detention,” the Ministry stated in a statement.
