Chepkemoi rules 3,000msc, in 4th AK/Betika meet in Afraha

The 4th weekend meet and the last inter-country track and field competitions this season concludes tomorrow before the action shifts to Nairobi City.

World under-20 bronze medallist Diana Chepkemoi from Lemotit Camp, romped to victory in the 3,000m steeplechase final on day 1 of the 4th Athletics Kenya/BETIKA 4th track and field weekend meet in Afraha Stadium,Nakuru City on Friday.

Chepkemoi outsprinted KDF’s Celestine Biwott, to cross the finish line in 9 minutes and 38 seconds, 1.5 seconds ahead of Biwott, who finished 2nd , while Winny Chepteek of North Rift completed the podium places, finishing 3rd in 10:16.8 minutes.

Cynthia Chepngeno, from KDF emerged the winner in the 5,000m, stopping the clock in 15:28.6 minutes ahead of her counterpart Gladys Jeptepkeny from Kenya Navy, who finished 2nd in 15 minutes 29.6 seconds, 0.03 seconds ahead of Cynthia Chepkurui of Lemotit camp, who rounded up the top three positions.

Kenya Prison’s Vincent Kibet, eased to victory in the 1500m, clocking 3 minutes 38.3 seconds, followed by KDF’s duo of Kyumbe Munguti and Charles Simotwo in 2nd and 3rd positions after posting 3:40.6 and 3:41 minutes, respectively.

Over 2,000 athletes turned out for the two-day event at the Blue Tartan track, the 1st event held at Afraha Stadium since it was closed for renovation over 5 years ago.
