Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has declared Monday, June 17 a public holiday.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares Monday, the 17th June, 2024, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-Al- Adha,” said CS Kindiki in a gazette notice dated June 13.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Isma’il (Ishmael) as an act of obedience to God.

The festival is observed on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

The exact date varies each year in the Gregorian calendar, as it is determined by the sighting of the moon.

Eid al-Adha is one of the two major Islamic festivals, the other being Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting.
