Egypt has announced a new natural gas discovery off its Mediterranean coast, marking a significant development for the country’s energy sector and reinforcing its position as a regional energy hub. Preliminary assessments indicate the presence of approximately two trillion cubic feet of natural gas, along with around 130,000 barrels of associated condensates, reports Sada El-Balad, a partner of TV BRICS.

The discovery is expected to enhance Egypt’s domestic energy supply, support economic growth, and contribute to long-term energy security. It also aligns with the country’s broader strategy to increase natural gas production and optimise the utilisation of existing infrastructure, including the national gas grid.

Energy experts have noted that the new reserves could help offset the natural decline in output from mature gas fields, where annual production typically decreases by 10 to 15 per cent.
The new offshore find complements Egypt’s existing gas infrastructure and previous major discoveries, experts stated. Continued exploration and the integration of new discoveries into the national grid are expected to further strengthen Egypt’s role in regional energy markets.
Overall, the discovery represents a strategic step towards enhancing Egypt’s energy independence, supporting economic resilience, and reinforcing its standing within the global natural gas industry.
