Government has reiterated commitment to combating drug and substance abuse, emphasizing the need for a collective approach in addressing this growing public health concern.
Speaking on the second day of the Public Sensitization on Drug and Substance Abuse in Kirinyaga County, Principal Secretary, State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni highlighted the importance of community-driven interventions, enforcement measures, and public education in reducing the harmful effects of substance abuse.
“The Government is committed to tackling the rising prevalence of drug and substance abuse, especially among the youth, through collaboration and strategic interventions.” PS Muthoni said.
Adding that: “We cannot afford to lose our young people to drugs and substance abuse. Through community-driven approaches, education, and strong enforcement, we are working to create a safer, healthier future for all Kenyans. This fight requires collective responsibility, and we urge every stakeholder to play their part,” she stated.

The sensitization exercise brought together key stakeholders, NGAO, and Community Health Promoters to strengthen the national response to substance abuse.
The initiative she says aligns with Kenya’s broader efforts to enhance public health standards and foster a healthier population.
“This training is an opportunity to equip our communities with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent substance abuse and promote healthier lifestyles. We will also inform on the Social Health Authority and the available benefits for those with mental health issues and those recovering from drug and substance abuse.” Said PS Muthoni.
