The government plans to operationalise a Regional Centre of Competence for Digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Skilling at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), as part of efforts to enhance public sector efficiency through emerging technologies.

ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui on Friday paid a courtesy call on his counterpart in the Public Service and Human Capital Development docket, Dr. Jane Imbunya, to discuss final preparations for the Centre’s activation.

The Centre, which is backed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is expected to play a key role in building digital and AI capabilities across government institutions.

“The Centre is envisioned as a strategic hub for building digital and AI capabilities across the public sector, thereby strengthening the government’s ability to deliver citizen-centric services in the digital era,” read a joint statement released after the meeting.

The two PSs also explored the Centre’s potential role in supporting Kenya’s digital diplomacy, particularly in fostering innovation and enhancing regional and international cooperation in emerging technologies.

They underscored the need to accelerate implementation frameworks to ensure the Centre delivers tangible results in transforming service delivery and supporting Kenya’s digital transformation strategy.

This comes a month after the ICT Ministry launched the Kenya National AI Strategy (2025-2030), a five-year plan set to position the country as Africa’s leader in AI innovation.
