International Men’s Day, celebrated annually on November 19th, puts the focus on the need for society to prioritize men’s mental health and well-being.
This year’s theme, “Positive Male Role Models,” calls for creating environments that encourage open conversations about mental health, celebrating male mentors, and supporting men to thrive in all aspects of life.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is defined as a state where individuals can realize their potential, cope with daily stresses, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
However, for many men, societal expectations often hinder the pursuit of emotional well-being, leaving them to silently grapple with mental health challenges.
In Kenya, the Ministry of Health’s Mental Health Policy 2015 – 2030 identifies mental health promotion as a national priority.
Collaborating with stakeholders such as NGOs, faith-based organizations, and private entities, the government aims to make mental health support accessible at community and county levels.
Despite these efforts, gaps remain, particularly in providing safe spaces tailored for men.
Organizations like KaziMind Wellness in Nanyuki have stepped in to fill this gap, championing these ideals through targeted programs and support groups designed exclusively for men.
Addressing critical issues such as addictive behaviours, emotional distress, and family dynamics, KaziMind creates a judgment-free environment where men can explore their struggles, break stigmas, and find practical solutions to develop self-awareness.
In a statement to KBC Digital, Njoki Kamau, Head Case Manager at KaziMind Wellness, emphasized the transformative power of caregiver wellness.
“Men often set the tone for family and community relationships. When they have a space to grow emotionally and mentally, it creates a ripple effect of positive change in homes and society.”
KaziMind’s men-only sessions explore the profound connections between mental health, fatherhood, and marriage.
Njoki also emphasized the critical role men play as caregivers and leaders in families and communities.
“This need extends to all men, including CEOs and organizational leaders. Many lack platforms to express their emotions and address their mental health challenges,”
She added, “Positive male role models play a vital role in shaping society by providing mentorship, guidance, and support.”
International Men’s Day traces its origins to Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh of Trinidad and Tobago, who envisioned a day to celebrate men’s contributions while addressing critical issues such as gender-based violence and male health.
His legacy inspires ongoing conversations around men’s well-being, urging society to take actionable steps toward change.
As we mark International Men’s Day 2024, initiatives like KaziMind Wellness remind us that change starts with creating spaces where men can thrive, become role models and, break generational cycles of silence.
