The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) will head to ballot on Thursday, 19th June, to elect new officials who will serve for the next four years.
Following the postponement of the election, which was the main agenda during the AGM convened on 24th April this year, some 29 delegates are expected to turn up again tomorrow to decide on the NOCK office bearers.
A total of 25 NOC-K-affiliated federations and four officials, including outgoing President Paul Tergat, athlete representatives Humprey Khayange and Hellen Obiri, and the woman representative Paurvi Rawal will also participate in the voting exercise.
It’s not all rosy ahead of Thursday’s election, as the four federations – Kenya Volleyball, Kenya Triathlon, Kenya Handball and Taekwondo – which failed to agree on their voting delegates, resulting in its postponement, are yet to agree both internally and in courts.
The four federations are yet to agree ahead of Thursday’s election.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) wrote to the current NOC-K office, making it categorical on the standoff of the four federations, but it seems it fell on deaf ears.
Should tomorrow’s election fail again, Kenya risks being sanctioned by the IOC, which may include the formation of a Normalization Committee and being barred from participating in international competitions.
The elections have sharply divided the outgoing executive into two camps, with 1st Vice President Shadrack Maluki going head-to-head against the Secretary General Francis Mutuku in a bid to succeed Tergat for the President’s position.
