The media fraternity is mourning the sudden death of Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) journalist Festus Amimo.
Until his passing, the vibrant and outspoken radio presenter served as the head of the Dholuo radio station, Mayienga FM.
Details surrounding his death in the early hours of Sunday remain scanty, but KBC management, led by Managing Director Agnes Kalekye, is working closely with the family to establish his last moments.
Amimo, aged 46, joined KBC in 2004. He was initially based in Kisumu as a presenter for the Luo Sub-Service before later moving to Nairobi when Mayienga FM was launched.
His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the media industry, with colleagues and friends expressing deep grief at his passing.
Ms. Kalekye who expressed shock at the news, paid a glowing tribute to the dedicated broadcaster, whom she described as more than a leader — a gentleman, a star, and a friend to KBC listeners and the entire team.
“We have lost a giant, a voice that will forever echo in our memories and in the community he served so faithfully. His warmth, dedication, and unwavering spirit touched countless lives and shaped the very heart of our station”, she mourned.
She further conveyed her deepest condolences. “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear colleague, mentor, and cherished presenter Festus Amimo , the respected Head of Mayienga Station.”
His immediate boss, Mary Daraja, the KBC Radio Programmes Manager, remembered Amimo as a great and passionate journalist whose exceptional leadership had helped propel Mayienga FM into a powerful Luo station.
A friend beyond the airwaves
“He was a hardworking dedicated breakfast presenter and head of Mayienga. He was passionate about radio. We have indeed lost a great journalist. It is heartbreaking to imagine that we ain’t going to see him again and share in his wisdom.
Amimo, who also served as the chair of the Luo Journalists Association, impacted many beyond the airwaves.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said he was deeply saddened by the passing of his friend, Festus Amimo. He praised him for his leadership and passion for storytelling, which shaped countless voices and strengthened the profession.
“Festus was a warm soul, a steady presence and a true friend whose kindness and humility touched everyone around him. As we mourn him, I hold his family, friends and all who loved him in my thoughts. May we find comfort in the memories we shared and the legacy he leaves behind”, he said.
