Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) has installed 12 ultra modern Weighing Sensors in Western region to curb overloading.

The maintenance-free sensors have been erected at Mau Summit, Cheptiret, Eldama Ravine, Eldoret, Kapenguria, Malaba, Mayoni, Mukumu, Ahero, Southern Bypass (both bounds), and Kamagambo to enforce the stipulated axle load limit.

According to the project’s operations manager, George Ngugi, the 12 virtual stations will seal all loopholes in the Northern Corridor and adjacent roads.

“The installation of the virtual weighing sensors was preceded by an upgrade of road pavement from asphalt to concrete standards to enhance durability,” Ngugi said.

He noted that improvement works have been completed in 10 stations, with only two remaining, to protect the maintenance-free scales and enhance efficiency.

“The mechanical and electrical works have been finalized, and the virtual scales and other accessories have been installed. We are now in the testing and verification stage,” Ngugi added.

The installations align with the East African Community Vehicle Load Control Act, which was passed into law in December 2015 and gazetted in 2016.

The law mandates that all vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes must be weighed at weighbridges, and any transporter who bypasses, absconds, or evades a weighing station is liable to prosecution.

It also sets the maximum axle load at 56 tonnes.
