Nakuru: One officer shot dead, two injured in gang attack

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the death of a police officer in Nakuru following an ambush by an armed gang.

In a statement on Monday, NPS said the robbers ambushed the officers who were foot patrol and opened fire killing one and I juring two others. The two are receiving treatment following the June 1st incident.

“The National Police Service wishes to inform the public about a shooting incident that occurred yesterday, 1 June 2025, in the Bondeni area of Nakuru County,” read the statement.

“Officers were in pursuit of armed criminals when a gunfire exchange occurred, unfortunately leading to the death of one officer and leaving two others injured,” it added.

Following the incident, police officers arrested three suspects at the scene and the recovery of  an AK-47 rifle which authorities believe was used to by the gang in their criminal activities. A manhunt was later launched leading to the arrest of four more suspects at a lodging in the Tahidis area of downtown Nakuru.

“Upon interrogation, the suspects led officers to a location where an AK-47 rifle was recovered. The firearm is believed to have been used by the gang in their criminal activities,” NPS said.

DCI Nakuru East detectives are processing the suspects for arraignment tomorrow, Tuesday, June 3.

The DCI have reassured Nakuru County residents that their security remains the foremost priority, and that several anti-robbery teams have been dispatched and are pursuing identified armed gangs whose operations have been analysed.

The operations seek to bring to an end reign of terror and rid the streets off armed criminals.
