Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has been denied entry into Tanzania along with activists Hussein Khalid and Hanifa Adan.
The decision comes in the wake of Sunday’s return of People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua and two others to Kenya by Tanzanian authorities.
“We’ve been detained at Julius Nyerere International Airport, and we’re not being told why,” Hanifa confirmed in an X post.
“Still being held at the interrogation area of the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam with Mutunga and Hanifa. Only been told to wait for the senior officer to arrive. No further information. They’re still holding our passports,” added Khalid
According to Khalid, there are plans for them “to be deported and put on the next flight back home,”
Like Karua and others, the three said they were travelling to Dar es Salaam to demonstrate solidarity with the country’s opposition politician Tundu Lissu, whose case is scheduled for mention in court today.
Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Korir Sing’oei, has called on the authorities in neighbouring Tanzania to free the three.
“We strongly urge the authorities in Tanzania to release the former Chief Justice of Kenya and his delegation consistent with the norms of the East African Community,” said the Foreign Affairs PS.
Unlike his predecessor, Willy Mutunga, former Chief Justice David Maraga entered Tanzania without any hindrance. He is also in the country to attend the hearing of a court case involving opposition politician Tundu Lissu.
“Safely arrived in Dar-es-Salaam. Headed to Court for the Tundu Lissu Court Case,”Maraga confirmed on his X account
