Nyando Member of Parliament Jared Okello has sought a statement from the Departmental Committee on Administrative and Internal Security regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi.
Speaking before the House on Tuesday, MP Okello sought justification on why police officers apprehended the late Ojwang and transferred him to Nairobi from Homa Bay County; provide a report on the circumstances that led to his death, legal basis for his arrest and reasons for his placement in solitary confinement, status of the investigation by IPOA.
He also wants the Committee to provide immediate disciplinary and administrative actions that have been taken against police officers who arrested the slain blogger and those who were on duty during the incident.
The late Albert Ojwang’ died as a result of head injury and neck compression, with multiple injuries spread across the body, according to an autopsy report released today.
Pathologist Bernard Midia stated that the bleeding patterns on Ojwang’s head were not consistent with self-infliction, noting that the injuries were likely caused by external forces.
“We found serious injuries on the head, neck compression, and soft tissue injuries spread across the body,” Dr. Media said.
“The pattern of the injuries on the head were spatially spread including the face, back and side of the head. When we tie up together with other injuries that are well, spread in the body, including the upper limbs under the trunk, then this is unlikely to be self-inflicted injuries.”
The Pathologist says, there were signs of struggle noting that tissue samples have been collected for further analysis by forensic laboratories to assist in the investigation.
The autopsy was conducted by a team of five forensic pathologists, including representatives from various interested parties, such as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), Kenya National Human Rights Commission and the Independent Medical Legal Organization.
The family of the deceased was also represented during the autopsy.
