Over 1,080 Kenyans are set to receive keys to their new homes following the completion of Phase 1 of the government’s Affordable Housing Program at the Mukuru Met Site in Nairobi County.

The milestone marks a significant step in addressing urban housing challenges, especially in informal settlements.

The homeowners participated in a one-day sensitisation forum held on-site on Saturday, ahead of a planned official handover ceremony to be presided over by President William Ruto next week.

Currently, over one million Kenyans are currently residing in 1,400 slums across the country.

These statistics are not just a number, they reflect lived realities.

Among them is Peter Obiri, a small business owner in Mukuru Kayaba, who has lived in a small bedsitter with his family for the past 10 years, paying Ksh 8,500 monthly in rent.

His story mirrors that of Peninah Wanjiru, a mother of ten from Mukuru Kwa Njenga, who has struggled for years to provide for her large family.

Her neighbour, Hellen Mwiti, shares similar hardships, often unable to meet daily needs due to the harsh economic climate.

However, for Peter, Peninah, and Hellen, hope is on the horizon since they are among the 1080 Kenyans set to benefit from the Housing Affordable Program, which aims to uplift thousands from substandard housing conditions.

The project is designed to house at least 13,250 units, which will include 26 blocks of bed sitters, 24 blocks of one bedrooms, which are 70pc complete and 48 blocks of two bedrooms, which are 55 per cent complete.

This will see their rent reduce by nearly 50pc monthly as the rent is set at 3,898 shillings monthly, which includes Mortgage repayment, Insurance and service charge.

Another 6 blocks will be ready in the next six months, with 1,296 houses allocated, bringing the total to over 2000 beneficiaries who are set to become homeowners.
