Nine dead after matatu plunges into Mbagathi River

Nine people died Saturday morning and 17 others were injured after a bus travelling from Gataka to Nairobi plunged into the Mbagathi River near Cooperative University of Kenya.

The 9.40 am accident occurred as the bus operated by Naboka Sacco, was heading to Nairobi from Gataka when the driver, who is among the fatalities, lost control and veered off the road plunging the bus into the river.

Police spokesperson Resla Onyango confirmed that the deaths

“…It happened that the vehicle was being driven from Gataka shopping centre towards Karen hardy direction on reaching Mbagathi river, the driver lost control and plunged into the said river. As a result of the accident, 6 people died on the spot while 2 died while being rushed to hospital,” a police report said.

18 were injured and rushed to various nearby hospitals but one more succumbed.

The vehicle was towed to the Hardy police station.
