The free flow of traffic along the Nairobi – Nakuru highway has been fully restored, the National Police Service (NPS) says.

According to a statement by NPS, the traffic gridlock that lasted for more than 15 hours was caused by several key factors among them heavy downpour experienced in Nakuru City, non-injury accident as well as motorist indiscipline.

“This unfortunate incident was caused by several factors, the key among them being heavy rainfall in Nakuru City and its surroundings, which began at around 4:00 pm yesterday and continued until 8:00 pm, a non-injury traffic accident near Baruk area, a second non-injury accident near Soysambu area, which further disrupted traffic flow just as it was stabilising.” The statement read.

Adding that: “The situation was further exacerbated by motorists failing to adhere to traffic rules, leading to overlapping and lane indiscipline.”

Teams from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), and the Ministry of Transport worked closely with police to manage the crisis.

“NPS, with support from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), and Ministry of Transport officials, responded swiftly and progressively restored smooth traffic flow. Additional police officers have been deployed and will take stern action against those flouting traffic rules.” Police noted.

To prevent future occurrences, the police have deployed additional officers along the route and warned that stern action will be taken against drivers who flout traffic rules.

Motorists have been urged to remain patient, maintain lane discipline, consider alternative routes to ease congestion and enhance road safety.
