The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed Eric Sekou Chelle as the new head coach of the home-based Super Eagles, less than a month before the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Chelle’s appointment comes after Daniel Ogunmodede guided the team through qualification for the tournament, which will be hosted next month by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The Malian-born Chelle, who is the coach of Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, has now been handed the additional task of coaching the national team for home-based players.

He faces a daunting task of reshaping the squad and stamping his tactical identity in record time as Nigeria prepares to face defending champions Senegal, Sudan, and Congo in Group D.

Expectations are high for Chelle’s first assignment as coach of the Super Eagles B side, which will put him in the thick of continental action after their 2018 CHAN runners-up result.

The squad reported for residential camp this week at the Remo Stars Sports Institute in Ogun State, with Chelle overseeing proceedings for the first time since his appointment.

Nigeria will play their opening two group matches against Senegal and Sudan at the Amman Stadium in Zanzibar, before they wrap up group play against Congo at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
