Butula Secondary School were crowned KSSSA National Rugby 7s champions for the first time on Wednesday, defeating Cardinal Otunga Mosocho 26-7 in a commanding display at the M-Pesa Foundation Academy.
The Western Region finalists produced a dominant second-half performance to pull away from Cardinal Otunga, scoring four tries and adding three conversions to seal their maiden national title.
It capped a memorable run through the tournament for Butula, who had earlier staged a remarkable comeback in the semi-finals, overturning a 12-0 halftime deficit against tournament debutants Bokoli to book their place in the final.
Cardinal Otunga reached the championship match after eliminating Upper Hill in the other semi-final, but could not find an answer to Butula’s second-half surge.
Bokoli capped an impressive debut campaign, defeating Upper Hill in the third-place playoff to claim bronze.
In the girls’ competition, Kinale wrote themselves into the record books by retaining their national title, becoming the first girls’ school in KSSSA Rugby 7s history to win back-to-back crowns.
The achievement underlines Kinale’s growing dominance in the discipline since it was introduced to the girls’ calendar, following a title-winning campaign built on consistency through the rounds at M-Pesa Foundation Academy.
Together, the two results brought a fitting close to the rugby sevens competition at this year’s KSSSA National Games, one champion breaking new ground, the other cementing a legacy.
