A section of former students from Alliance Girls High School on Thursday held peaceful protests at the institution over reports of alleged sexual abuse by a male teacher.

Zahra Nechesa, an alumni advocate, said the group plans to sue the school’s management for allegedly shielding the teacher and prioritising the institution’s reputation over student safety since 2011.

The Parents Teachers Association (PTA) chairman confirmed that an ad hoc committee, which has been formed in collaboration with KUPPET, the Ministry of Education, and the alumni, has launched an investigation into the shocking revelations following an exposé by African Uncensored.

The committee is expected to table a report by the end of next week.

The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) has strongly condemned the alleged sexual abuse, calling for swift and decisive action by both the school and the Ministry of Education.

“These reports are not just shocking, they are heartbreaking,” FIDA-Kenya Chairperson Christine Kungu said.

“We are appalled that a person charged with guiding and mentoring students could instead use that position to allegedly harm them. These young women have shown tremendous courage by speaking up, and we stand with them.”

Kungu said the testimonies shared by survivors reveal not just abuse, but a pattern of neglect by those meant to protect them.

FIDA reminded schools and the government of their duty to provide a safe learning environment.

The organisation said it is offering legal and psychosocial support to the affected students and encouraged others with similar experiences to come forward.
