Detectives have uncovered a secret narcotics laboratory believed to have been operating within a secluded compound in Mwabungo village, Ukunda, Kwale County.

The raid, conducted by officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit and the Kenya Police Service, followed days of intelligence gathering and covert surveillance.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the one-acre compound, hidden behind tall perimeter walls and a heavily guarded gate, concealed a fully equipped drug-manufacturing facility.

A 37-year-old Italian national, Gianardi Giulio, and a Kenyan identified as Moses Nanoka Egadwa were arrested during the operation.

Detectives also recovered chemical substances, laboratory equipment, and packaging materials clearly marked with the names of known narcotics.

Further inspection of the compound revealed sections allegedly used to grow cannabis, pointing to what authorities suspect was a long-running illegal drug operation.

“The National Police Service has reiterated its commitment to dismantling drug networks and keeping Kenyan communities safe from the harmful effects of narcotics and the illegal drug trade,” said the DCI in a statement on X.

The two suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be formally charged in court.
