The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has urged countries within the Commonwealth to strengthen their collaboration in the fight against terrorism, money laundering, and other forms of transnational organised crime.
Addressing delegates at the opening of the 23rd Heads of Prosecuting Agencies Conference (HOPAC) held in Mombasa, Mr.Ingonga emphasised the significance of working together through frameworks such as the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) Unit, the Commonwealth Cyber Declaration Programme, and the Commonwealth Security Group (CSG).
“These initiatives are critical opportunities to strengthen our effectiveness in addressing threats to national and international security,” he stated.
The DPP also emphasised the need to support interventions that extend beyond legal prosecution, such as reconstruction, disengagement, reintegration, and reconciliation, which he believes are essential for addressing the root causes of terrorism and fostering long-term peace and stability.
Mr Ingonga encouraged participants to use the HOPAC platform to share truthful conversations and develop strategies aimed at fostering international cooperation.
“Let us seize this opportunity to build bridges, break down barriers and forge an unbreakable chain of collaboration,” he said.
The three-day conference has brought together key figures, including Kenya’s Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, Director of Criminal Investigations Mohammed Amin, and 19 Heads of Prosecuting Authorities from across the Commonwealth.
Countries represented include the United Kingdom, Australia, Wales, Zambia, Uganda, and Mozambique.
Also present were international legal experts, regional stakeholders from the Criminal Justice Systems, including members of the International Association of Prosecutors.
