The family of nine that perished in a suspected arson attack a fortnight ago was laid to rest at Upanda village in Sigomere sub-location, Ugunja sub county.
A sombre mood engulfed the air as a section of mourners wailed loudly when a convoy of vehicles carrying nine coffins with the charred remains of the late Richard Ouma Opondo, his wife Jacinta Anyango and seven children snaked its way to Ninga primary school grounds where the funeral service was held.
During the funeral service, mourners led by Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol and politicians Otieno Alur and Fred Z.B. Owino challenged the government to ensure that those behind the incident were brought to book.
They called for speedy investigations, adding that the public was waiting for the outcome of the police investigations.
Ugunja politician Otieno Alur however called on the residents to be peaceful and allow the government machinery to do their work diligently.
He challenged the public to always be each other’s keeper by being vigilant and reporting people with suspicious behaviour to the authorities, adding that the tragedy would have been prevented had there been stronger community ties.
The family was burnt to death when arsonists locked their house from outside and set it ablaze. The incident occurred on April 22, 2025.
Police have since arrested a man and his wife who are neighbours to the family in connection with the incident.
