In form, Beatrice Chebet missed 2.5 seconds breaking the 5000m world record at the Rome Golden Gala Diamond League on Friday night.
The double Olympic champion crossed the finish line in 14:03.69, a meeting record, a world-leading time, and the second-fastest time ever recorded in the 12.5-lap race, after the 1997 Gudaf Tsegay time of 14:00.21.
Freweyni Hailu of Ethiopia finished 2nd in 14:19.33, while Italian Nadia Batocletti finished a distant 3rd in 14:23.15.
“I can see that my body is in good shape and that I am capable of achieving the world record. Now I am going home to prepare for it. Everything is possible.” said Chebet
It was the 2nd fastest time recorded by Chebet in less than a month over long distance after posting a world-leading time in the Rabat Diamond League last month.
2019 World Champion Timothy Cheruiyot finished 2nd in the 1500m with a personal best time of 3:29.75, just 0.02 seconds behind French Nadsine Habb, who out sprinted him in the closing moments to emerge victorious.
Commonwealth champion Ferdinand Omanyala finished 3rd in the 100m in 10.01 seconds.
American Trayvon Brommell won the race in a world-leading time of 9.84 seconds, followed by Cameroonian Emmanuel Eseme in 9.99 seconds.
