The Titanic Dam in Juja, popularly known as a ‘park and chill’ spot, has recently been causing more sorrow than fun.

The scenic dam, popular among outdoor enthusiasts, has become a death trap due to fatal accidents caused by its dangerous currents.

The dam’s deep waters pose significant risks to both residents and visitors. Recently, local authorities imposed a ban on swimming and fishing activities at the dam following the tragic drowning of two university students during a swimming expedition.

The victims, Dansteph Matoke, 21, and Abel Mikaye, 22, students at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), were enjoying a day of swimming at the dam when tragedy struck.

To prevent further loss of life, the communities living around the dam have erected signage and warning banners against swimming in the waters.

In addition to the banners, locals have launched a sensitization campaign aimed at urging visitors to exercise caution to avoid potential tragedies.

According to area MCA Ngatha Wambiri, the region lacks basic safety measures, including lifeguards, and there are no divers available at the dam.

The recreational site was thrust into the media limelight in January 2023 when a man and a woman lost their lives after their car plunged into the dam. According to local residents, the couple had been enjoying their time near the dam when tragedy struck.

Hotel owners in the area have urged revellers to swim in designated, safe areas, such as community pools, or in other bodies of water with better infrastructure and safety measures.

They have also called for greater collaboration with authorities, including the police, to enforce regulations and respond swiftly to any incidents.
