Kenya Sevens, Shujaa secured their place in the semi-finals of the HSBC Singapore Sevens Cup by winning Pool B with victories of 17-7 and 10-7 over Ireland and France, respectively.
Shujaa opened their campaign,beating Ireland 17-7 in the first match taking a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes thanks to an early try and conversion from Nygel Amaitsa.
Kevin Wekesa then scored in the sixth minute to make the score 12-0 at the break.
Patrick Odongo would go over the try line in the 12th minute to take the score to 17-0, before Ireland’s Josh Costello went over to make it 17-7 at full-time, after Mark Roche’s conversion.
Vincent Onyala broke past the French defence in the third minute of Shujaa’s opening goal in the second pool match against France, and Nygel Amaitsa added the extras to give the team a 7-0 lead going into the half-time break.
Shortly after the interval, the Olympic gold medallists would respond with a conversion by Enahemo Artaud and a try by Quere Kabaka.
Nygel Amaitsa split the uprights to win the game 10–7 and secure the team’s first semi-final appearance since they were promoted back to the World series in the 2024–25 season.
Shujaa would win a penalty 40 meters away, dead centre, choosing to go for the kick in the final minutes of the second half.
After the final round of pool games, Shujaa’s opponent will be revealed later in the day.
Kenya’s Cup semifinal is scheduled for Sunday, April 6, 2025, at 9:34 AM.
Shujaa is making their first appearance in the main cup semifinals this season, and they are on track to match the 2016 triumph, in which they won the Singapore Sevens Championship for the first time ever.
