Kenya Police emerged the overall men’s champion of the National Open Boxing Championship, which concluded yesterday, amassing 21 points, edging out fierce rivals KDF, who finished second with 16 points.
Kenya Prisons Department finished 3rd with 11 points, followed by Nairobi and Siaya Counties in 4th and 5th positions with 7 and 3 points, respectively.
Kenya Police won five of the 8 weight categories they contested while KDF contested in six and won four .
KDF edged out Siaya county by a point to win the overall women’s title acummilating 7 points by winning 2 of the 4 weight categories they competed while Siaya finished 2nd with 6 points winning all the two categories they participated.
Kenya Police Service and Kibera tied in position 3 with 3 points followed by Kisumu,Nairobi and Meru counties which tied in 4th position with 2 points apiece.
The championship, which ran for four days instead of the traditional three due to high entries, was the third local event of the year organised by the Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK).
It featured 105 male and 21 female boxers from 16 teams representing various counties and boxing clubs across the country.
BFK paid homage to the great boxing fathers with a sumptuous lunch at Chel’C restaurant, after which they graciously took part in awarding the best championship performers along with handing over IBA certificates to newly accredited 1 Star Coaches, as well as 1 and 2 Star Referees and Judges.
