The Serbian government has condemned Kenya’s decision to recognise Kosovo as an independent state, terming it a violation of international law.

In a statement issued by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Serbia described the move as a blatant breach of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, which guarantees Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“This decision comes in the year marking the 80th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Charter, which Kenyan authorities have disregarded with this move. It also undermines efforts to foster constructive dialogue, regional stability, and respect for the international legal order,” the statement read.

Serbia vowed to take diplomatic and political measures in response, calling Kenya’s decision an “unacceptable and unfriendly act”.

“This sets a regrettable precedent in traditionally friendly relations between Serbia and Kenya—ties built over decades on principles of mutual respect and cooperation, including within the Non-Aligned Movement,” it added.

On Wednesday, Kenya officially announced its recognition of Kosovo following a meeting between President William Ruto and Kosovo’s special envoy, Behgjet Pacolli, at State House, Nairobi.

The State Department for Foreign Affairs stated that the decision was made in the interest of international peace, security, and territorial integrity, as well as to strengthen relations with Balkan nations.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 following years of tensions and conflict.

However, Serbia does not recognise Kosovo’s independence and some countries, including Russia and China also do not extend recognition.
