Strong winds warning for coastal strip, Eastern and North Western Kenya

Wave heights of over 2-meters high are likely over the Kenya coastal waters beginning Friday, to Sunday and reduce on Monday.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has sent out a warning for strong winds in the counties of Counties of Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale.

The Director of Meteorological Service Dr. David Gikungu in an interview with KBC, attributed the strong southerly winds to strong ocean currents in the Indian Ocean.

“The winds of more than 30 knots are expected over the Coast, the South-eastern lowlands and North Western Kenya on Friday, 23rd May 2025 will strengthen to more than 35 knots on Saturday, 24th May 2025 and Sunday, 25th May 2025,” he says and adds, “the wind speeds are likely to reduce to 25 knots on Monday 26th May, 2025.”

Dr. Gikungu is urging residents in all the counties that have been mentioned “to be on the lookout for potential gale (very strong winds) and large waves over the Indian Ocean,” he says and adds that, the anticipated strong winds may blow off roofs and cause structural damage to buildings.

Those involved in marine activities are being warned of large waves the “may lower visibility and affect marine activities beginning Friday to Sunday.”
