Africa Inland Church (AIC) Kenya Deputy Presiding Bishop, Paul Kirui has mourned the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, terming it as a great loss to the country.

Kirui described Raila as a selfless and patriotic leader, a true nationalist who devoted his life to pursuit of justice and unity of Kenyans.

The deputy bishop, who was speaking at his office in Kericho sent his condolences to the family and friends, calling on the nation to honor his legacy by embracing unity, justice and peace.

Raila Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday morning in India after a short illness was a veteran politician who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013.

He said Raila fought for democracy in Kenya, placed the interest of the nation above his own and a mentor to many.

Meanwhile, a cross-section of leaders from Kisii County join the rest of the country in mourning the late Odinga, who passed away in India while receiving treatment.

The leaders described Odinga as a fearless and visionary statesman whose contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey and governance reforms remains unmatched.

They credited him with championing major political and constitutional milestones, including the repeal of Section 2A, which paved the way for multiparty democracy, and the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution, which entrenched devolution and expanded citizens’ rights.

Former Tabaka Ward MCA Daniel Ombasa Apepo urged leaders across the political divide to tone down their rhetoric and unite in honoring Odinga’s legacy as the nation prepares for his burial.

Marani Ward MCA Dennis Ombachi hailed Odinga as the architect of devolution, saying that many of the development gains witnessed in counties today are a direct result of his relentless push for equitable resource distribution.

Nominated MCA Lilian Gor mourned Odinga as a selfless patriot, noting that his role in mediating peace during the Gen Z protests helped the country avert deeper crisis and restore national stability.

“The gap he has left will never be filled,” she said.

Elsewhere, the Kikuyu Council of Elders described Odinga as a leader who dedicated his life to justice, democracy, and National Unity.

The Council Secretary General, James Nene said Odinga often chose reconciliation over conflict and unity over division, qualities that helped shape Kenya’s democracy and inspire many citizens.

The elders sent their condolences to Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family, and the Luo community, saying they stand with them during this difficult time and on behalf of the silent members of the kikuyu community.

They also thanked President William Ruto for his message of calm and unity, noting that his tone has helped bring the country together. The Kikuyu Council of Elders urged Kenyans to honour Raila Odinga’s legacy by embracing peace, mutual respect, and service to the Nation.
