The African Union High-Level Panel on Sudan and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Special Envoy to Sudan have stressed that there is no military solution to the Sudan crisis.
In a joint statement by the AU High- Level Panel and the IGAD Special Envoy to Sudan, the facilitators reaffirmed their commitment to supporting a Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led process that reflects the aspirations and welfare of the Sudanese people and returns the country to a civilian-led constitutional order.
The AU-IGAD mediation team was speaking at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa where they had met to discuss the way forward towards an inclusive Inter-Sudanese Political Dialogue.
“Between 19 – 21 February, under our joint auspices, Sudanese civilian political groups convened at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa to discuss the way forward towards an inclusive Inter-Sudanese Political Dialogue.” The statement read.
The meeting highlighted the fluid and complex situation in Sudan, emphasizing the deepening divisions that complicate efforts toward a unified political solution.
The Sudanese groups endorsed an AU-IGAD-led process as the framework for achieving a credible and lasting political settlement.
“The meeting reaffirmed that the situation in Sudan remains fluid, and increasingly complex, with recent developments further deepening divisions and complicating efforts to achieve a unified political solution. We acknowledge the Sudanese groups’ strong endorsement of an AU-IGAD led process as the framework for achieving a credible and durable political settlement.”
The consultations underscored the urgent need to address humanitarian concerns and secure an immediate ceasefire while simultaneously laying the groundwork for a long-term political resolution.
The mediators urged all stakeholders to work together in good faith to bridge current divides and take decisive steps toward peace.
